Sept 24th, 1961

I was six when I received this postcard from Sonja. She had left for Greenwich, Connecticut to train as a Montessori teacher, leaving me, my older sister Victoria, and my younger brother Chris back in Detroit in the care of our father, Gilbert. Mr. and Mrs. James Rose, a nice young couple, were hired to help out. To leave your children for a year in order to study and create a career for yourself was unheard of in those days, the early 60's. Even today, it might raise some eyebrows.

Darling Moira,
These flowers are for you. Look at them often and remember how many beautiful things are around us . . .
Today I learned something new. I painted and converted two old wooden whiskey crates from the basement into bookcases. And I found some red bricks for bookends.
A kiss for your right cheek and a kiss for your left cheek. From ~Mother
